An Interview With A Dockyard Worker

What drew you to working at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard?
A: I wanted to gain experience working on a heritage site as it'll be beneficial to my future career aims.

What have you learnt about the site whilst working there?

A: It contains one of the oldest still-used office buildings in the UK, where Charles Dickens' father used to work and the modern museum was opened by The Princess Royal. Additionally, the land does not actually belong to the museum or the City Council, they merely rent it from the Ministry of Defence for the times they need it. A bit like a timeshare.

What stands out most to you about the landmark following working at the Dockyard?

A: Its continual use and how passionate people are about it. Although I'm a history student and British history in particular interests me, I have never really been too passionate about naval history, however it is always very nice to talk to those who are. Some of my colleagues have written books about the ships and have appeared on radio and TV shows discussing their importance. The presence of the naval servicemen is also an exciting aspect, something that you can be a bit in awe of since many of the officers have been serving since before we were born.

What do you personally believe to be the most significant aspect of the dockyards history and contribution to the city?

A: It isn't discussed too much in the museum but the dockyard was first and foremost where the dockers worked. It provided employment for more than just the matlows.

What do you wish more people knew about the landmark?

A: It houses the naval archives. This is something I think most looking into naval history would know but the everyday person perhaps not. Anyone can book to view these documents.
